Western Australia (WA) is fortunate to be free from many of the diseases that affect aquaculture production and fisheries in other parts of Australia and the world. In other cases, diseases may only be known to occur in part of WA.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) animal biosecurity branch undertakes a range of aquatic animal health and biosecurity initiatives to minimise the risk of significant aquatic animal diseases entering and spreading in WA, and to respond to new occurrences of disease to minimise the impact.
DPIRD also undertakes a range of aquatic animal health activities as part of the national animal health system, such as disease surveillance testing and reporting that underpins trade of WA seafood and aquatic animals.
These activities help protect WA’s commercial and recreational fisheries and aquaculture industry from the impact of significant aquatic animal diseases, and support access to markets for WA’s premium seafood products.
DPIRD’s Diagnostics and Laboratory Services (DDLS) provides an important aquatic animal disease testing service to support this work.
