The Western Australian food and beverage manufacturing sector is essential in converting agricultural products into consumable goods that move through the supply chain to reach both domestic and international markets.

With WA having a global reputation for producing safe, premium-quality food and beverage products, the sector is vital to the economy.

The department supports initiatives aimed at growing this important sector.

Sustainable Innovative Food Technologies Centre

The Sustainable Innovative Food Technologies (SIFT) Centre supports the growth of WA's food and beverage manufacturing sector by providing access to advanced processing equipment in a certified, commercial-scale facility.

Officially opened in February 2024, the $12.2 million Centre is located within the Food Innovation Precinct WA (FIPWA) at Peel Business Park in Nambeelup. Funded by the department and operated by the Future Food Systems Co-operative Research Centre in collaboration with Murdoch University, SIFT is a key enabler for innovation, product development, and business scale-up.

SIFT is open to all WA food and beverage businesses looking to scale up production, trial new products, or access expert guidance in a low-risk, shared-use environment. The facility offers subsidised use of cutting-edge equipment, allowing businesses to refine and test products without the need for significant capital investment.

With the potential to generate over 150 direct jobs and contribute approximately $100 million to the WA economy, SIFT is expected to play a vital role in expanding the state’s value-added food sector.
