Surf Beaches Mobile Coverage Grants Program

This grant program provides funding to improve mobile coverage at remote beaches across Western Australia.

The Surf Beaches Mobile Coverage Grants Program aims to enhance mobile coverage at beach locations across regional Western Australia that currently have poor or no coverage.

This program benefits tourists, regional communities, and visitors by improving recreational activities and ensuring the safety of beach users.

In Round 2, $2 million in funding was allocated from the State Agricultural Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund.

In Round 1, Powertec Telecommunications was successful in securing State funding to provide Cel-Fi Repeaters at 35 beaches stretching around the coastline from the Kimberley to Esperance. These repeaters are providing better mobile coverage to support emergency responders, tourists, regional communities and visitors.

The project is currently in progress.

What was available?

The program covers capital costs for improving mobile connectivity to the site(s).

Capital costs may include:

  • infrastructure
  • engineering design
  • site acquisition
  • power/solar/battery connection
  • construction
  • equipment
  • regulatory approval costs and related one-off expenses, including costs for labour.

Who is this for?

Licence Carriers under the Telecommunications Act 1997.

Non-Licence Carriers will be considered for Cel-Fi repeater solutions.

Successful recipients

Round 1

The WA Government awarded $1.1 million to Powertec Telecommunications Pty Ltd to deliver mobile repeaters at 20 popular surf beaches primarily to enhance the safety of the community and visitors at popular beaches from the Kimberley to the Goldfields-Esperance regions.
