Bathurst burr (Xanthium spinosum) is an invasive weed that poses a threat to the wool industry, pastoral agriculture and native vegetation, due to its adaptability and capacity to spread.
Bathurst burr is a declared pest and must be reported to DPIRD if found or suspected to be present in Western Australia.
The department has been involved in managing Bathurst burr since the 1980s in Western Australia (WA), with the main aim of protecting the wool industry from its impacts. Landholders, local government and other state government agencies play a key role in assisting with the early detection, reporting and control of Bathurst burr.
Identification and control
All landholders have a legal obligation to control declared pests on their land under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.
You must report the presence of Bathurst burr to the department before undertaking control.
How to identify and control Bathurst burr
The department has developed a plan of activities to be undertaken to support the containment and/or eradication of current Bathurst burr infestations in WA over the next 5 years. DPIRD will continue to collaborate with key stakeholders including landholders, local governments, recognised biosecurity groups (RBG) and industry groups to implement this plan.
