
North Coast bioregion
The North Coast bioregion in Western Australia (WA) runs from the Ashburton River (21° 46’ S and 114° 50’ E) south of Onslow to the border of WA and the Northern Territory.
Make sure you are familiar with all the rules that apply in the North Coast bioregion before you make your trip. If you are unsure about the rules or need further advice, contact a department office near you.
Areas closed to the take of specific species
The Northern Zone, or Zone 2, extends from Greenough River mouth to Northern Territory border. Abalone fishing is closed from the area north of Moore River, including the entire Northern Zone, until further notice.
Abalone fishing closures also apply to areas in the Gascoyne Coast, West Coast and South Coast bioregions
DPIRD manages all fishing and aquaculture inside marine protected areas. Different fishing rules apply in different zones. Ensure you stay up to date with the fishing rules in these areas.

This area is closed to all fishing within 500 metres of the wreck sites (intersection of 20° 25.81' S and 117° 12.80' E). |
Point Samson Reef Protected Area |
This area is closed to all commercial fishing and the collection and take of live/dead shells, squid, octopus, crab, coral and other invertebrates. Recreational fishing for finfish by rod, reel and line or handline is permitted. Recreational fishing for bony fish by speargun, gidgee, or other pointed instrument is permitted (sharks, skates and rays cannot be taken). |
Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park |
Fishing from a boat in the area of the Fitzroy River known as Danggu or Geikie Gorge is not permitted. More information is available on the DBCA website. |
