Marine Fauna Sightings

The Marine Fauna Sightings app is designed to allow all water users to digitally submit their sightings of whales and other marine fauna off the Western Australian coast.

What is the Marine Fauna Sightings app?

The app is designed to allow fishers, citizen scientists and all water users to submit their sightings of marine fauna off the WA coast.

Reporting sightings of marine fauna give us a better understanding of where and when different species move along our coast, and their behaviour patterns. This information will greatly assist us in protecting these important species that frequent and migrate through our coastal waters and help us to provide better management information to the fishing industry.

The Marine Fauna Sightings app offers an easy way to identify and submit your sightings of our unique WA fauna:

  • Designed to be user-friendly, utilising features of your phone to create an easy way to submit sightings of iconic marine fauna.
  • Includes a map feature that allows you to track your sightings as well as those submitted by other users.
  • The app’s 'species' list will help you identify your sightings from among WA’s 28 unique marine fauna species.
  • The easy-to-use ‘report’ function guides you through the process, allowing you to contribute to the mission of protecting these incredible species.
  • There is also a 'survey' function that enhances the 'report' function allowing the capture of not only where fauna was seen, but also not sighted while the user is undertaking a trip.
