The department recognises customary fishing as an integral part of WA’s Aboriginal culture. We understand its importance in maintaining connection to country, for food security, health and wellbeing, education and passing on knowledge to new generations. Customary fishing also includes a cultural obligation to look after fish and sea country.
WA fisheries legislation explicity recognises customary fishing. This recognition is consistent with national and international laws that acknowledge that Aboriginal people have rights to fish and hunt in accordance with ongoing tradition and culture.
The department is working with Traditional Owners around the state to design new customary fishing rules that better reflect customary fishing rights and responsibilities to ensure sustainable fishing into the future.
