Low Emissions Intensity Farming System

The Low Emissions Intensity Farming System (LEIFS) initiative aims to have 80% of Australian on-farm grain production actively benchmarked in enterprise greenhouse gas (GHG) accounts for improved business performance and market access by 2030.

Future market opportunities linked to low-emissions grain is an important consideration for realising the best market price for Australian grain and retaining market share.

The LEIFS initiative will run from 2025-2030 and demonstrate the benefits of monitoring, managing and reporting (GHG) accounts at the farm scale, enabling farmers to make informed decisions based on metrics related to productivity, profitability, and GHG emissions intensity.

It aims to give grain growers practical options to manage emissions risks and identify which GHG markets and sustainability credentialing schemes best align with their business goals, as well as the requirements of the full supply chain.

Our research

WA DPIRD has a key role in the Action Research Network and the Accessible Greenhouse Gas Monitoring program.

Action Research Network (ARN) program

The ARN program is a national framework that will work with farmers, agronomists and other grains industry stakeholders. In Western Australia, 4 knowledge hubs will be established in Esperance, Katanning, Merredin, and Geraldton.

On-farm demonstrations co-ordinated through the knowledge hubs will showcase low emission grain production, and explore the benefits and trade-offs associated with including emissions into regular on-farm decision-making.

Regional emission benchmarks generated as part of the project will allow growers to contextualise emissions production data at a farm scale.

Accessible Greenhouse Gas Monitoring (AGM) program

The AGM program will provide access to practical and high integrity information to enable emissions management to be incorporated into on-farm decision making.

DPIRD economists will be undertaking cost benefit and trade off analysis for regionally appropriate emissions mitigation strategies. This will allow growers and advisers to have confidence to engage in available GHG markets, identify opportunities and understand requirements and risks in making decisions.

Project funders and partners

LEIFS is an initiative funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (WA DPIRD) Agriculture Climate Resilience Fund.

The project is a collaboration between the GRDC, CSIRO, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development NSW, South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and WA DPIRD.
