Declared Pest Rate

A declared pest is an animal or plant species that causes unwanted impacts on people, the economy or environment, and has therefore been declared under the   Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 (BAM Act).

What is the Declared Pest Rate?

The Declared Pest Rate (DPR) and matched State funding are used to help landholders to manage widespread and established declared pests in specific areas.

Under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 (BAM Act) the State raises a DPR from landholders in specific areas, and matches the funds raised from the rate dollar-for-dollar.

The combined funds are made available to Recognised Biosecurity Groups (RBGs) who provide support to landholders in managing widespread and established declared pests.

Consultations

In accordance with the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management (Declared Pest Account) Regulations 2014 , the Minister for Agriculture and Food carries out annual consultation on the DPR. Consultation takes place prior to the rates being determined and gazetted.

The department releases a summary of the submissions received during consultation and provides a response to any significant issues raised in the submissions.

The annual consultation is a valuable process to enable the department to gauge landholder perceptions of the Declared Pest Rate.

The department appreciates the efforts of those who take the time to lodge submissions.
